Going Green for Eye Health

In a few weeks we’ll all be seeing various shades of green and it has nothing to do with a strange medical condition! On this day of the year everyone, no matter what their heritage is, turns Irish! However, while we are all for celebrating the luck of the Irish, the word "green" has a different meaning to many of the health professionals at Eye Associates.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When it comes to the color green, we like to think food (specifically food that is good for your eyes.) There are so many foods rich in antioxidants that are healthy for our eyes. Green, just so happens, to be the color of many of these foods! This St. Patrick’s Day, consider adding more of these emerald colored eye healthy foods to your celebrations.

Green Bell Peppers

Not only are green ball peppers an excellent source of vitamins A and C, they are also found in countless recipes, making them an fantastic food for boosting your eye health.

Leafy Greens
Dark leafy greens like kale and spinach are loaded with the antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin. These antioxidants are known to boost the function of the macula, which is the part of your eye that protects against harmful sunlight. So think of a big green salad as an extra sun-blocking boost for your eye… but don’t forget your sunglasses for maximum sun protection!

Pistachios

The often-overlooked green nuts are also an eye healthy snack. Just like leafy greens, pistachios are full of eye friendly antioxidants, but unlike leafy greens they also contain loads of Vitamin E.

Avocados
Avocados are loaded with powerful antioxidants that can protect the eyes. Not only do avocados increase antioxidant absorption from other foods, they are also high in antioxidants themselves. This includes nutrients called Lutein and Zeaxanthin, which are incredibly important for eye health.

 

Love Shamrock Shakes? Consider this healthy alternative:

Blend:

-2 cups of ice

-1/2 of a small avocado

1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream

-1/2 cup of spinach

-1/4 cup of coconut milk

-1/2 tsp. of peppermint extract

-1/2 tsp. of vanilla

-1 tsp. of Agave nectar
